The Alzheimer’s Society has received a donation of £1568 from Furness Building Society to help fund research into dementia and to promote awareness of the simple ways people can help sufferers.
The donation was generated by the Society making a payment for each vote cast by its members at the 2016 annual general meeting, as they played their role in directing the future of the Furness.
Alzheimer’s Society Community Fundraiser for Cumbria and Lancashire Sue Swire accepted the cheque which she said was highly valued in today’s climate as charities found it tougher to meet their fund-raising targets.
The choice of the Alzheimer’s Society was particularly welcomed by Furness Marketing Support Manager Sarah Wane who commented: “Like so many people I have had personal experience of the impact when a family member suffers from dementia, and anything which raises the awareness of the condition and helps people to cope with its effects must be welcomed.”
The Alzheimer’s Society has launched the Dementia Friendly Communities initiative which aims to ensure people with dementia remain active members of their communities. The guide contains information about how dementia affects people’s experience of shopping. It is also packed with practical tips on how retailers can best support customers with dementia while they shop - from staff signing up to become Dementia Friends to making store layouts more accessible.
