Furness Building Society's Chief Executive Rob Cairns recently attended the presentation ceremony for Red Alert North England. The Furness operates a successful Affinity Account which supports Red Alert, the organisation that is fighting to conserve the red squirrels. The Red Alert Affinity Account has grown in popularity over the years and in 2008 the annual donation by the Barrow based mutual soared to £16,184.80.

Lord Inglewood. Patron of Red Alert North England, accepting the cheque said 'This contribution, which together with the donation from the Tourism and Conservation Partnership amounted to £30,000. This shows how strongly this area is committed to saving the red squirrel. Not only will £30,000 make a real difference, it will release nearly £16,000 from Lottery Funding. A total of £45,000 is a real shot in the arm for the work to save the red squirrel'.

Rob Cairns, from the Furness said:
"I am delighted how our Red Squirrel Premier Savings Account continues to grow in popularity with more people investing more money each and every year. This has resulted in the Society paying significantly more out each year in its 1% bonus, with this year's payment amounting to £16,184.80, which all goes towards helping the preservation of our red squirrel population. I would make a plea to anyone interested in saving this beautiful animal to put their savings into one of these special accounts".
