Movement Magic

Between February and June a drama specialist, Jakki Moore has been working with the children of Millom Infants School to develop their speaking and listening skills.

Jakki used poems and stories to inspire the children and provide opportunities for them to join in with simple songs and poems. She has helped the children learn how to project their voices clearly and enjoy 'playing with the sounds of words'.

The children have been encouraged to imagine themselves in different situations. They moved in different ways to show the characters, the creatures and the features of these imaginary landscapes.

The Headteacher, Sandra Quinn said...

'It is really important that the children enjoy learning and this project has enabled them to have lots of fun but develop vital skills which will help them read and communicate. The experience had also helped the children develop their confidence and self esteem. One mother, for example, recently expressed her surprise that her daughter was able to speak up in a school assembly . She never believed that her child would be able to that. The teachers have also looked forward to Jakki's sessions and have been amazed by the differences that they have seen in the children.

We have been very grateful for the donation from Furness Building Society which has made this possible and the co-ordination by Cumbria Arts in Education.

We are already planning how the project can continue and hope to use drama to help children to learn in other subject areas such as maths... Long may this project continue!'

Branch Regional Manager Barry Fitzsimmons has recently been appointed a trustee of Cumbria Arts in Education. Barry said 'I am delighted that the Furness has been able to assist with the donation and also that I am able to add some practical support by being a member of this fantastic organisation. Everyone at the Furness wishes this scheme success and this particular project is especially relevant in one of our key local branch areas'
