Furness Building Society has recognised a growing awareness by its existing borrowers of the need to consider their 'carbon footprint' when carrying out home improvements. The mutual building society, based in Barrow in Furness is offering existing borrowers a 'Green Further Advance'. This product has an additional discount off the normal further advance product for energy saving improvement work therefore reduces the cost of borrowing for certain 'green improvements'. To qualify, these improvements will include domestic wind turbines, double glazing, home insulation, solar panels and biomass energy manufacturing.
Chief Executive Rob Cairns said 'The Furness has become increasingly aware of the importance of green issues to our customers. We have developed this additional loan facility that gives added benefits to our borrowers who want to improve their properties within the range of environmentally friendly improvements identified. We do intend to extend this type of mortgage to new borrowers and we are sure public awareness of such issues will continue to increase. As an organisation, the Furness is also looking at ways of reducing its own carbon emissions and becoming more environmentally friendly as we recognise this as being an issue of importance.'
